The Special Nature Reserve Obedska Bara is the second oldest protected area in the world (the oldest in Europe) and a wetland of international importance (listed as a Ramsar site and IBA and IPA area). Obedska Bara, famous ornithological site, is an oxbow lake surrounded with marsh and forest habitats. Wetlands are among the world’s most threatened ecosystems and this one has been gravely degraded, the most important problem being the overgrowing and disappearance of wet meadows.

More than 50% of the inhabitants of Serbia live in villages. For many years constant migration from the villages to towns leaves indelible effects on the remaining population in the villages. In recent years there has been developed a strong movement for rural sustainable development through sustainable tourism in ethno villages representing the traditional Serbian life style. This small but entire community is doing their best in preserving the valley and keeping the mountain clean and accessible for nature lovers.

Volunteers will have many activities on the nature preservation including cleaning the beach, doing patrols and building various fixtures such as small bridges. Participants will also help monitor birds for a scientific group.

In an area between Osaka and Nagoya, there were plans for a golf course and disposal of industrial garbage, but the local community stopped them with the ‘Woods Trust’ movement. The group was formed in 1996 to collect donations to buy and protect the land, to build an eco-resort to enjoy nature, to maintain forests, to create a pond for dragonflies, etc.
