Muirkirk IVP - 17th-31st August 2023
Xchange Scotland teamed up with ’s Countryside Services Section and Muirkirk Enterprise Group this August (in beautiful weather!) to host an environmental International Volunteer Project (IVP) based in the Muirkirk community...

Cairn Table, located in Muirkirk, is one of the highest hills in Ayrshire and a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and an SPA (Special Protected Area). The path leading to Cairn Table was in need of some repair and so a path maintenance and construction project was developed. Thirteen volunteers from France, Germany, Switzerland, Catalonia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic signed up to help.
Muirkirk Enterprise Group was keen to become involved in the project and arranged accommodation for the volunteers as well as a Ceilidh and Burns Supper. Muirkirk Bowling Club was also kind enough to arrange an afternoon of bowling for the volunteers.
John Griffiths, Head of Leisure Services for East Ayrshire Council said: “For two weeks, the volunteers worked in all weathers constructing boardwalks and steps up Cairn Table as well as creating extra drainage on the path. The volunteers worked incredibly hard and the work will make a positive difference to the erosion of the path.
“The group also enjoyed visiting Glenbuck with the Countryside Ranger Service and spent the day at Cumnock Highland Games. The project has been a great success with many new friendships being forged. Countryside Services hopes that based on the success of the project it will become an annual collaboration.?
Congratulations to all involved - the hosts, the volunteers and the volunteer group leaders.
