Xchange Scotland is looking to recruit one female or male volunteer to take part in a 3-month international volunteering project with our local partner, The Auchindrain Trust.
The international volunteering ‘Auchindrain Township Museum Project’ is held for a period of 11-12 weeks during the summer of 2019. The project will start between 22nd and 29th June and will finish in mid September. There is some flexibility with dates, by arrangement.
This exciting opportunity is available at Auchindrain, a historic site township museum in the rural west of Scotland, Argyll. You will learn about and experience a past way of life, and support the museum’s collections management and research.
What is it?
Auchindrain covers more than nine hectares, and contains all the buildings of a small farming community set in a historic landscape which evolved over five centuries. The museum attracts many visitors from mainland Europe. Your main task will be to familiarise yourself with the township and its story and to support the museum’s collections management and maintenance. You will also undertake a variety of historical and other research tasks. You will also have the chance to get involved in other aspects of museum life. Normally, you will be working both indoors and outdoors and will be expected to work 5 days a week from 8.30am to 5pm, with a 30 minute lunch break.
Two weeks of the placement are expected to be spent on secondment to the museum on the island of Islay, where the work and learning opportunities, and accommodation arrangements, will be comparable, but the environment very different.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for one volunteer with an advanced level of English. Ideally, you will be about to start, in the course of, or have completed, a University degree. You will have good spoken and written English, and be interested in finding out about places like Auchindrain and the way of life of its people.
You will be physically fit: although you will not be expected to undertake significant manual work: Auchindrain is not a suitable environment for those with mobility difficulties or impaired eyesight. The museum has considerable experience in hosting placements: people find the experience immensely rewarding, but the environment can be challenging: emotional and mental strength are needed. You will be at least 17 years old, willing to work on your personal and professional development and able to participate in the project fully from the beginning till the end. You must have EU national status.
Please download a full Volunteer specification at the bottom of this page for more information.
Location: Auchindrain is located six miles south of Inveraray, in Argyll, and is an hour and a half from Glasgow by bus. The museum is set in a spectacular mountain landscape, with plenty of opportunities for walking and exploring.
Accommodation & food: You will stay in a large residential caravan located within the museum, which you will be sharing with up to 4 other young people from Universities in the UK or mainland Europe. The accommodation, provided free of charge to you, is simple, but warm, dry and clean with kitchen, shower and toilet, and two twin and one single bedrooms.
Along with the rest of the young people, you will be expected to live together in a cohesive way with English as the common language. You will be sharing cooking, cleaning and other domestic duties.
Financial arrangements: You will be provided £58 weekly allowance to cover food and leisure time activities. No hosting fee is charged. You need to be able to pay for your own return travel and any excursions you’d like to make whilst you are in Scotland.
What to bring: You will need to bring your own laptop, EU to UK power adapter and mobile phone. A full list of items to bring will be provided to the selected volunteer.
