It’s been just a few weeks since the group of A&M Scotland volunteers returned from their volunteering project “Let’s Build Europe” in France. While discovering new culture, 9 young Scottish volunteers spent two full-on October weeks in a tiny village of Laguépie, working on tasks benefiting local community. Let’s have a look how their French adventure went!
The partnership between Xchange Scotland and Solidarités Jeunesses, one of our largest partners in France, made it possible for the short-term EVS “Let’s Build Europe” to happen. The project that was fully funded by Erasmus+ programme aimed to bring together young people with fewer opportunities to build up skills, self-confidence and capacities. When experiencing international environment, volunteers managed to create more tolerance and intercultural understanding. Besides, they also strengthen relations inside of the group itself and became better team-players. Paul, deputy chief executive at A&M Scotland and also one of the leaders of the volunteers, nods: “I thought that the project was going to be much harder for us, I thought that the group would have fallen out. Instead, it actually made the group stronger and we discovered a lot about each other!” Alongside with the local French volunteers, the Scottish volunteers spent most of their days working on outdoor manual activities such reconstruction work and painting. They also got the chance to meet local people of Laguépie during the community BBQ event.
“I think the work and project itself were both really very meaningful to me. Before, I did not know how to go abroad and do new things there, but now I feel much more comfortable and confident about doing it and I will do it again,”, says Kevin, one of the volunteers who is already thinking about becoming a long-term volunteering experience abroad. Another of the volunteers, Kerry, adds “I feel like I could have stayed another week! We all enjoyed the project as it was something very different and new to us!” And we feel the same, Kerry! So let’s work hard and share and offer these great adventures to all of you! That’s all for now, see you soon!
